behind bars...

Today we visited the Wells Fargo History Museum in Charlotte with friends from Japan. I took a photo of Stan behind the old bank teller's window.  Seeing Stan behind bars reminded me of photo we received the other day from across the "pond."

We'll be having this little man visit us next month--and I  think we may need to get some "bars" to keep him from venturing up (or down) our staircase unattended.

Two handsome men behind bars.  Glad this is only temporary!

Member Care Consultation and the Gospel in Hard Places

Last month I flew to Turkey for an international consultation of Member Care professionals. We discussed issues related to people serving God in difficult places. Because many of these folks are in restricted access countries I won't be writing in detail about our gathering. I am blessed by the many who have chosen to follow God even to those hard locations, and those whose ministry is to care for those working in these places. I've not had a lot of personal time to reflect on what I learned there yet but am thankful for the opportunity to attend and look forward to catching up with myself sometime soon!

I decided to join an add-on tour to the sites of the "Seven Churches in Revelation" after the gathering. Following a consultation where the topic of risk in mission was central, it was insightful to see where these early churches were located amidst religious centers hostile to the Gospel.  To the right is a photo of me at the Theatre in Hierapolis, nearby the location of Laodicea. It is said that the Apostle Philip preached and was  martyred in Hierapolis.

Jesus said, If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. John 15:18-21
